‘The 63’ – Club Notes 21/03/23

The-63-v2-1

Activities around the club are up and running and the positivity with members has everyone excited about the year ahead.

It was so encouraging to see the young boys and girls representing the club on St Patrick’s Day. Thanks to our coaches and parents who assisted on the day to make the parade an enjoyable and memorable occasion for the young kids. The day was topped off by our generous sponsor Kelly’s Centra Mountain Top  suppling our members with treats on the way home. Photos are on our club socials.

With the return to games it’s important that those participating are registered. Registration, which closes on 31st March 2023 is available on the following link.
Membership – Termon GAA

The development of the clubs facilities continues to move forward in impressive fashion thanks to the countless efforts of our members who are giving up their free time in the build of the clubhouse. With the pitch area now a construction site, keeping our members and visiting gaels safe is a priority. Additional stewart’s will be needed on match day and if members can help out just present yourself on the day to a member of the executive.

On the pitch, there was double joy for the senior men and ladies on St Patrick’s Day with fine victories over Dungloe and Naomh Conaill in the Comórtas Peile Na Gaeltachta. Congratulations to the new management teams for starting their tenures with  wins. After an opening win the previous week , our senior reserves men bowed out of the junior competition losing to Na Rossa on Sunday. Match reports can be found below.

The men are back in Gaeltachta action on Sunday 26th March away to Cloughaneely and another win would put them into the finals weekend hosted by Naomh Mhuire on the May Bank Holiday weekend.

Ladies
Congratulations our ladies senior player Ciara McGarvey who was named as a Yoplait HEC All Star for her part in ATU Donegal’s Lynch Cup win. Ciara also received the Player of the Match award in the final. Aibhe McDaid was also part of the Lynch Cup winning side.

Termon Senior Ladies are playing away to Noamh Mhuire on Sunday 26th March at 10:30 am and the Junior Ladies are playing away to Letterkenny Gaels on Sunday also at 10:30am. All our Ladies from under 10’s up are now back training and looking forward to the season ahead.

Well done and good luck to all our county players Kate McCafferty and Cayla McFadden (under 14), Maeve Brady and Niamh bonner (under 16) and Jodie McFadden, Ciara mcGarvey, Nicole McLaughlin, Evelyn McGinley and Emer Gallagher who look to help Donegal retain their Division One status this weekend against Mayo.

Carla Hernando on her debut for Termon

Carla Hernando, a young woman from Bilbao, Spain, has made headlines in Ireland after joining the Termon GAA Club to play Gaelic Football. Her journey began as an opportunity to learn English but soon found herself immersed in a new culture and a new sport.

“I never expected to fall in love with Gaelic football or with Ireland, but I’m so glad that I did,” Carla said. “It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful to the Termon GAA Club for welcoming me into their community.”

Carla’s story has captured the hearts of many who see her as a symbol of the power of sports to bring people together across cultural and linguistic barriers. She has shown that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.

Minor
In the underage ranks, the u17’s start their competitive season at the end of the month against St Eunan’s while the u13’s are preparing for their campaign with challenge games and all other age groups are working away between pitch, astro, gym and at the Craoibhinn.

John James Sweeney has been solid with the Donegal U17 team this season, they are unbeaten with three wins on the bounce and Cian McMenamin who is in his first year with the Donegal U20 side , has a championship opener against Antrim to look forward to on Wednesday 29th March.

New referees are being sought on an ongoing basis as the shortage in the county at all levels continues. Officials are finding it harder to get referees for games and the shortage could see matches spread over additional days than just the regular Saturday’s and Sunday’s. If any members would like to become involved contact our Chairman Brian Trearty or Secretary Kieran Gallagher. The referee is just as important  and fulfilling  as playing. Beginners courses are available. It’s also a good route to take when playing comes to an end for individuals. We as a club we love to assist the county with more referees.

Items for inclusion in the club notes can be sent to pro.termon.donegal@gaa.ie.
Since the club are celebrating the 60th anniversary this year, we have branded the club notes as ‘The 63’ to mark the occasion.

Match reports from St Patrick’s Weekend.

The senior reserves interest in the Comortas Peil na Gaeltachta came to an end against a physically stronger Na Rossa senior team on Sunday at the Burn Road.

A poor start that saw the hosts go 1-04 to 0-01 behind after 10 minutes combined with a large wide count over the hour were major factors in the defeat.

An Eoghan Quinn goal brought the game to 4 points in the middle of the second half but that’s the closest Termon could get to a strong Na Rossa side.

Kevin McDaid, Patrick McDaid and Cormac Brady were best for Termon in a hardworking team performance.

Next up for Hugh Harkins side is the beginning of the league season on the weekend of the 1st of April with Fanad coming to the Burn Road.

McFadden strikes late as Termon down Dungloe.

A Ryan McFadden goal with essentially the last kick of the game gave Termon a winning start to the year with a three-point victory over Dungloe.

They advance in the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta after a 2-5 to 0-8 win at the Burn Road on St Patrick’s Day giving Trevor Alcorn his first win  as senior manager in his first competitive game in charge.

Termon lead 5-4 at the break with five different scores in the opening half – Anthony Grant, Steve McElwaine, Aaron Reid, Jack Alcorn and Bobby McGettigan.

Noel McBride, Shaun McGee, Daire Gallagher and Daniel Ward pointed for Dessie Gallaghers side.

Termon’s only  scores in the second half were goals as Oisin Harkin netted the first just five minutes in, to put them four up but Dungloe responded with three scores from McGee (2) and Ward.

Daire Gallagher almost had the visitors ahead but would hit the post as Dungloe found themselves hunting goals.

With the hour played, Oisin Bonner pointed to level the tie 1-5 to 0-8.

It seemed the game was heading for extra time but Termon were given one last chance as McFadden would find the back of the net in a crowded goal mouth to set up a tie with Cloughaneely in the next round.
